Surprise, Arizona is a city of around 93,000 spread about an area of about 70 square miles. It is the located in Maricopa County and is the second-fastest growing city in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Surprise is largely a retirement community with Sun City Grand allowing the city’s population to increase more than seven-fold in just a few decades.
Roads leading into the area include Interstate 17 (Black Canyon Freeway), I-10 (Papago Freeway), and State Route 101 (Agua Fria Freeway). Compared to the rest of the state Surprise’s annual fatal accident count is significantly higher. Public transportation is provided by Valley Metro.
Like many areas in the Southwest United States, Surprise is situated in a dry, desert region and as such tends to be dry all year. When it does rain, even small amounts can cause the roads to become slippery due to accumulating tar and oil. In addition, due to the ground’s dry hardness, even small amounts of precipitation can cause flash flood conditions. Other than that, Surprise’s other environmental concerns are searing heat in the summer months as well as dust storms that can sometimes blanket the area.
