Sunrise, Florida is a city of around 90,000 spread about an area of about 18 square miles. It is located in Broward County and was originally called “Sunset”, which didn’t sit well with developers. Public transportation is provided by Broward County Transit (BCT), which connects with bus and rail services in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Overall, fatal accident counts in Sunrise are significantly higher than the state average.

The city is part of the tropical rainforest climate area with warm winters, hot summers, and a high probability of drenching rains during the summer months. Hurricane season runs from June through November and Sunrise is most likely to be hit during Cape Verde season, from mid-August through September.
