Suffolk, Virginia is a city of around 79,000 spread about an area of about 429 square miles. It is an independent city in the Hampton Roads metro area and is the largest city by area in the commonwealth. Suffolk’s economy is traditionally peanut processing and transportation based. Other sectors such as manufacturing, distribution, retail, hospitality, and farming also play a role.

The area is served by U.S. Highways 17, US-13, US-58, US-258, and US-460, Interstate 664 and State Route 10. Compared to the rest of the state Suffolk’s annual fatal accident count is considerably higher. Public transportation is provided by Hampton Roads Transportation Authority (HRTA).

Suffolk has a humid subtropical climate as such the city is accustomed to mild winters and hot humid summers. Precipitation is fairly evenly spread throughout the year with the wettest months being in winter and early summer. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes. In addition, remnants from Atlantic hurricanes can sometimes affect the area with heavy rain and high winds.
