Located in the Midwest region of the United States just south and west of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and north of the Meramec River, St. Louis is built on riverside bluffs, terraces and rolling prairies. The city has a varied topography with low hills, shallow valleys, sinkholes and caves.
With no mountains or large bodies of water nearby, St. Louis is affected by cold Arctic air from the north as well as hot humid air from the Gulf of Mexico.
The city often experiences severe and unpredictable weather. The spring season brings tornados, thunderstorms, high winds, large hail, and torrential downpours. St. Louis’ tornadoes have been known to be strong and, at times, extremely damaging. Winter often brings snowstorms, freezing rain and ice pellets and heat waves are not uncommon during the summer months.
Every year, travelers make their way to St. Louis for the world-renowned Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, which has been performing for 130 years and is the second oldest in the country. Other attractions include sporting events; historical sites such as the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France; and museums; as well as ragtime, jazz and blues music.
A bustling center of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medicine, manufacturing and transportation, St. Louis also sports the third-largest inland port in the U.S. and 21st largest overall, by tonnage.
St. Louis has been consistently ranked among the top three most dangerous cities in the United States for decades. Since 2009 however, crime rates have improved significantly, dropping the city back in the list to number 15 in terms of crime.
