South Bend, Indiana is a city of around 108,000 spread about an area of about 39 square miles. It is the seat of St. Joseph County and is the fourth largest city in the state. South Bend’s economy is largely based on the University of Notre Dame, which is the county’s largest employer but healthcare and high-technology companies also make their home there.

South Bend connects to the rest of the state via several notable highways including Interstate 80 and I-90 (Indiana Toll Road) as well as Indiana Highway 2, Indiana 23, Indiana 933, and US Highway 20, and US-31. Public transportation is provides by South Bend Public Transportation Corporation (TRANSPO), which operates bus routes between the city and suburbs.


South Bend has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The area is accustomed to cold winters and hot humid summers. Precipitation is fairly evenly spread throughout the year with the wettest months being in winter and early summer. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes.
