Seattle AUTO INSURANCE (WA)
Seattle is located in the state of Washington and is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest. A thriving seaport between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Washington, the city is located about 100 miles south of the Canadian border and is the cultural and educational center of the region.
The aviation, architecture and recreation industries are particularly strong in Seattle, which also has a reputation for heavy coffee consumption and production. Trade and commerce also flourishes from the city’s chief harbor, Eliott Bay.
Green technology is also particularly advanced in the city, which has strong policies regarding urban design, building standards, clean energy and climate change. These have been particularly designed in response to Seattle’s status among the most car-congested cities in the country. There have also been strong efforts to reduce pollution by promoting compact development and effective control strategies.
The city is located in what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, a major earthquake zone. Frequent and severe earthquakes often do significant architectural and property damage. The city also sits near the Seattle Fault and the Cascadia subduction zone. Although neither of these has caused quakes in the city, the Cascadia zone is capable of causing serious damage with a quake of magnitude 9.0 or higher.
Seattle has a temperate, rainy climate, with extreme temperatures largely moderated by surrounding bodies of water. Pacific storms are generally prevented by the nearby Olympic Mountains and Arctic air from the Cascade Range. Still, the city experiences frequent rain and cloudy weather with occasional thunderstorms and heavy downpours that have been known to cause widespread flooding and property damage. Ice pellet storms and heavy winds have also been known to hit the city.
While crime in Seattle saw major drops in 2007 and 2008, bringing crime rates to a 40-year low, more recent statistics show a subsequent rise in crime. The largest increases were in homicide and rape, burglary, robbery, aggravated assault, and larceny/theft.
