Scranton, Pennsylvania is a city of around 72,000 spread about an area of about 25 square miles. It is the seat of Lackawanna County and is the principal city in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and an occasional but rare tornado. In addition, remnants from Atlantic hurricanes can sometimes affect the area with heavy rain and high winds.
