Rochester is the third largest city in New York State with a population just over 200,000. In 2007, Rochester was ranked the sixth “most livable city” by Places Rated Almanac and in 2010, Forbes Magazine ranked it the 3rd best place to raise a family.
Sitting on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Rochester is located east of Buffalo, west of Syracuse, and is bisected by the Genesee River. The city occupies around 36 square miles and lies within a humid continental climate zone with four distinct seasons including cold snowy winters and generally comfortable summers though the occasional heat wave is not uncommon. Due to its proximity to Lake Ontario, precipitation is plentiful throughout the year.
Rochester’s crime rate is relatively high with violent crimes in 2006 ranking over twice the national average and personal and property crimes also ranking well above average.
The city’s economy relies primarily on a number of well-known businesses including Eastman Kodak, Bausch and Lomb, and Xerox. Rochester’s reputation for imaging and optical science industries and at universities has garnered it a reputation for being the world capital of imaging.
