Roanoke, Virginia is an independent city of around 94,000 spread about an area of about 43 square miles. It is the located in Roanoke Valley and is the tenth-largest city in the state. Roanoke is historically a manufacturing-based economy based on the Northfolk and Western Railroad.

Roanoke can sometimes experience strong violent storms with tornadoes along with the effects of the occasional remnants of hurricanes which blow in from the Gulf.
