Richmond, Virginia is a city of about 200,000 in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Richmond is an unincorporated and independent from any county. Richmond’s residents are spread out over an area of around 63 square miles. The city’s economy relies primarily on the legal and financial industry as well as government business and has many federal, state, local agencies in its downtown area.

Richmond is largely served by Interstate 64 and I-95, which are two of the state’s most well-traveled roads. Local and paratransit bus service is operated by the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC). The GTRC does not comprehensively serve the entire Richmond area so many suburban communities do not have any public transportation despite dense population and business growth.

Richmond is subject to a warm, sub-tropical climate and experience warm, humid summers and relatively mild winters. Mountains to the west of Richmond provide and effective barrier again cold continental winter air. Richmond is prone to flooding from the James River and experiences the effects from tropical storm systems in the summer months, particularly torrential rains. The area can also see damaging thunderstorms and an occasional tornado.
