Portland AUTO INSURANCE (OR)
Located in the Pacific Northwest, Portland is the largest city in Oregon sitting at the convergence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Due to its strong land-use planning, investment in light rail, distinctive regional government and strong policy initiatives, the city is known for being the most environmentally friendly city in the country and second in the world.
The city is also known for its microbreweries, microdistilleries and coffee. With a thriving theater and entertainment scene, Portland was named amongst America’s top “Big City Arts Destination.” Portland has also earned the nickname The City of Roses, for its numerous rose gardens, which thrive in the city’s ideal climate.
Portland was built on top of the Boring Lava Field, an extinct Plio-Pleistocene volcanic field. Mount Hood, a dormant but potentially active volcano, lies east of the city and the active volcano, Mount St. Helens, lies just north of Portland. The latter of the two has been known to dust the city with ash during eruptions.
The city’s economy is largely based on transportation, real estate, construction, logistics and manufacturing. Portland is the largest shipper of wheat in the country and is home to one of the largest commercial dry docks as well.
Lacking sea breezes due to its inland location, Portland often experiences heat waves during the summer months. While winters are generally mild and snowfall is rare, major snow and ice storms have occurred in recent years largely due to air outflow from the Columbia River Gorge.
Population growth in Portland is among the top in the country. Consistent with trends of major cities throughout the country seeing high rates of urban growth, Portland’s crime rate is above the national average in all categories except for murder. Property crime ranks among the most prevalent in the city, which is a major area of concern for city officials in the coming decade.
