Peoria, Illinois is a city of around 113,000 spread about an area of about 47 square miles. It is the seat of Peoria County and is the fifth largest city in the state. Peoria’s economy is based largely upon Komatsu America’s off-highway truck manufacturing and Caterpillar Inc., whose world headquarters are located in Peoria. Archer Daniels Midland also has operations there.

Peoria is accessed by Interstate 74, I-474, and I-155. In addition Illinois Route 6, IR-8, IR-29, IR-40, IR-91, and IR-116 also run through the area. Compared to the rest of the state Peoria’s annual fatal accident count is usually lower. Public transportation is provided by the Greater Peoria Mass Transit District with 20 routes operating under the name CityLink.

Peoria has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The area is accustomed to cold winters and hot humid summers. Precipitation is fairly evenly spread throughout the year with the wettest months being in winter and early summer. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes.
