Serious tornados hit Oklahoma City on a fairly regular basis resulting in billions of dollars of property damage and personal injury. The most severe weather hits the city between March and August but tornadoes have occurred in every month of the year and wind speeds have been known to top 318 miles per hour.
The city’s economy, though traditionally centered on government and energy, has since diversified to include information technology, health services and administration. Numerous government buildings and air force bases are located in the city as well as a number of Fortune 500 companies.
Oklahoma City is known for heavy drug use and a high prevalence of street gangs. Gangs in Oklahoma City are heavily involved in violent and property crimes. Gang-related violence presents the greatest challenge to the city’s law enforcement agencies as gang wars have grown to gain national attention and over 6000 gang-members are estimated to be out on any given night. The city is also home to numerous Mexican drug cartels such as the notorious Juarez and Sinaloa Cartels.
