Oakland AUTO INSURANCE (CA)
Located on the American West Coast, Oakland is a major port city along the San Francisco Bay. It is also home to the largest urban saltwater lake in the country, Lake Meritt. The city’s nearly half-a-million residents are spread out over 56.1 square miles of land.
Historically a center for transportation and agriculture, Oakland has since become a center of marine cargo transport as a major West Coast port. With large populations of minority groups, Oakland is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country.
Oakland is divided into over fifty distinct neighborhoods. Reflecting the strong economic divide as well as Oakland’s topography, the city’s more affluent communities are located in “the hills,” with poverty concentrated in “the flatlands.” Oakland has struggled with high unemployment and high levels of violent crime in poorer areas of the city, but is pursuing a process of gentrification with hopes to better integrate members of different Oakland communities.
Due to its close proximity to the San Andreas Fault, the city has experienced earthquakes on numerous occasions, including the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake which caused many deaths and a great deal of property damage. Oakland also sits directly on the Hayward Fault, which poses another potential threat.
For decades, Oakland has been ranked one of the most dangerous places in the country. Violent crime rates are consistently in the top five in the country and property crime is generally three to four times national averages. The Oakland Police Department has responded by increasing the number of police officers, which has led to minor improvements in crime rates but Oakland still ranks among the worst.
