Norman, Oklahoma is a city of around 116,000 spread about an area of about 190 square miles. It is the seat of Cleveland County and is the third largest city in the state. Norman is the center of the county’s employment and business but it is also well-known as the home of the University of Oklahoma, which is the state’s largest college with approximately 30,000 full-time students.

Several major highways serve the area including Interstate 35, US Highway 77 as well as State Highway 9 and US-77H. Compared to the rest of the state Norman’s annual fatal accident count is lower. Public bus service is provided throughout the area by Cleveland Area Rapid Transit (CART), which is operated by the University of Oklahoma.


With a humid continental climate, Norman has hot summers, cold winters, moderate humidity and frequent, violent thunderstorms. Snowfall can be low to moderate and blizzards are known to affect the area. Due to its proximity to Tornado Alley, during late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes.
