Norfolk is an independent mid-sized city of nearly 240,000 in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Norfolk is Virginia’s second-largest city occupies an area of about 54 square miles.

Norfolk is located in a humid subtropical climate characterized by mild to cool winters and very warm humid summers. July is typically the warmest and rainiest month. Precipitation in general is evenly spread throughout the year with October being the driest time. Due to its southern location and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk can sometimes be affected by hurricanes and tropical storms.

Norfolk’s economy is largely centered upon the military, particularly the United States Navy as well as the defense contracting industry. Overall, military and defense-related business accounts for over 35% of the area’s Gross Regional Product.

After defense, cargo and shipping account for a substantial portion of Norfolk’s economic clout followed thereafter by tourism aided greatly by the over 100,000 cruise ship passengers who visit each year.

Crime in Norfolk soars above the national average. Violent crime in particular far outpaces the nation’s rate and while property crime is lower than that, it is still higher than normal.
