New Orleans Auto Insurance (LA)

Located in southeastern Louisiana along the Mississippi River, New Orleans is a major port city, located just over 100 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. The city is known for its jazz music, cuisine, and annual festivals as well as its hurricanes.

Due to its low elevation, New Orleans is particularly at risk for hurricanes being surrounded by water from the north, east, and south. Hurricanes have come to define the city’s reputation following the devastating 2005 Hurricane Katrina when 80% of the city flooded. Parts of the city were then re-flooded just one month later by a subsequent Hurricane Rita.

Today the risk of damaging hurricanes in New Orleans is much greater than ever before due to coastal erosion, mostly from human interference. These coastlines once naturally protected the city from storm surges. While billions of dollars have since been dedicated to protecting the city from future natural disasters, there is no guarantee current measures will be effective.

Despite still being in a continuous process of recovery, New Orleans’s economy has picked up. Millions of tourists come from far-and-wide for the city’s attractions, such as the world-renowned nightlife in the French Quarter and on Bourbon Street, Tulane and Loyola Universities on St. Charles Avenue, the historical mansions and the Pontchartrain Hotel and Magazine Street, not to mention famous celebrations such as Marti Gras. The city has a strong focus on the entertainment industry.

Crime in New Orleans has been a major and ongoing problem though generally concentrated in certain impoverished neighborhoods away from the tourist districts. Homicide rates remain high despite overall decreases in crime in the city. The current administration of New Orleans has vowed to commit itself to addressing the problem of violent crime through initiatives such as implementing checkpoints during late night hours in problem areas.
