Modesto, with its population of just over 210,000 spread over 36 square miles is the 17
largest city in California. The city is about 90 miles east of San Francisco and 70 miles south of Sacramento. Modesto has been honored almost 30 times as a Tree City USA honoree.
Modesto is a large agricultural area with milk, almonds, chickens, cattle, and walnuts as its primary products. The city’s largest employers are thus food oriented though education and healthcare also feature prominently in its economy.
Modesto’s violent and property crime rates rank statistically higher than the California and the city has the inglorious distinction of being the number one city for car thefts per 100,000 people in 2008.
The city’s climate is wet and cool in the winter with hot dry summers. The city’s primary weather hazards include flooding, due to the city’s lack of a full sewer system, and heat waves. Modesto can also experience the occasional earthquake due to its proximity to several faults running through the area.
