Jersey City is New Jersey’s second-largest city with nearly 240,000 living on just 15 square miles. Jersey City is located within New York City’s metropolitan area and it functions as a vital transportation and distribution center. In addition, the city’s economy is driven by a powerful service industry which played a prominent role in its waterfront redevelopment. Newark’s office-space real estate market is also one of the nation’s largest.

Jersey City’s climate is a humid subtropical characterized by hot humid summers and cold dryer winters. The hottest months are July and August and while late spring and early autumn see the most rain. Winters can be wet and cold with prevailing wind patterns that blow in from the nearby Atlantic Ocean, which can also affect the area with an occasional hurricane or tropical storm. Strong thunderstorms are also possible during late spring and early summer and tornadoes are always a possibility.

Given its size, population density, and proximity to the New York area, crime in Jersey City can be higher than the national average. Violent crime in particular is considerably high though over the past few years it has been in a steady decline. On the plus-side, property crime and theft are lower than or on pace with the national average.
