With a population of over 200,000 spread over nearly 70 square miles, Irving, Texas is a large suburban area of Dallas and is thought to be named after notable author Washington Irving. With no direct route to the sea, the city is part of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States known collectively as the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

Irving is accessed by numerous highways criss-crossing the area such as the John Carpenter Freeway, State Highway 114, and the President George Bush Turnpike. Despite the abundance of roadways and automotive traffic, Irving consistently ranks lower than the state average for fatal accidents. Irving is also served by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) with several bus routes and also two stops on its Trinity Railway Express route.

Irving has one of the hottest humid subtropical climates in the United States so winters are generally mild while summers are warm to hot. It is in the heart of Tornado Alley and in the spring, the city is subject to severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes.
