Indianapolis is the capital and largest city in the state of Indiana and the thirteenth largest in the United States. Its over 800,000 residents are spread out over 362 square miles in the American Midwest. It has been designated the most racially integrated city in the northern U.S.

Crime in Indianapolis is significant although historically below national averages. Homicide rate increases have been among the largest in the country in recent years. Violent crimes have increased by an average 8% per year. The Indianapolis Police District serves about 37% of the population and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department serves the remaining 63%. The city is the 33rd most dangerous city in the United States.
