Gulfport, Mississippi is a city of around 70,000 spread about an area of about 64 square miles. It is located in Harrison County and is the second-largest city in the state. Gulfport took a major hit from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and much of the city was destroyed.

The city is accessed from north by east-west Interstate 10, which intersects US Highway 49 (25th Avenue). US-90 (East Beach Boulevard) also runs along the Gulf Coast and is a main road through the city. Compared to the rest of the state Gulfport’s annual fatal accident count is typically higher. Public transportation is provided by Coast Transit Authority (CTA).

Gulfport has a humid subtropical climate as such the city is accustomed to mild winters and hot humid summers. Precipitation is fairly evenly spread throughout the year with the wettest months being in winter and early summer. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes. In addition, remnants from Gulf of Mexico hurricanes can sometimes affect the area with heavy rain and high winds.
