Elgin, Illinois is a city of around 108,000 spread about an area of about 25 square miles. It is the located mostly in Kane County and a portion of Cook County as well. It is the eighth largest city in the state. Elgin’s is considered one of the fastest growing cities in the state and could one day be the second-largest behind Chicago. Its economy is largely based upon retail and residential development.

The area can be accessed from Interstate 90 (James Addams Memorial Tollway), State Route 31 (State Street), SR-59 (Sutton Road). Compared to the rest of the state Elgin’s annual fatal accident count is often lower. Local bus service is provided by PACE, which operates about one dozen fixed routes. Commuter train service is provided by Metra.

Elgin has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The area is accustomed to cold winters and hot humid summers. Precipitation is fairly evenly spread throughout the year with the wettest months being in winter and early summer. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes.
