Des Moines, Iowa is a city of about 200,000 and is the most populous city and capital of the state. Des Moines is also the seat of Polk County and it occupies an area of around 77 square miles. The city’s economy relies primarily on the insurance industry as well as financial services and publishing and it gets its name from the nearby Des Moines River.
Des Moines is intercut by Interstate 235 while I-35 and I-80 both pass through the metropolitan area. Traffic congestion is heaviest where all three interstates converge as well as on I-235 on the city’s west side. I-235 is often cited for its congestion and accident frequency prompting city planners to consider installing speed cameras to cut down on violators. Des Moines’s public transportation is the Des Moines Area Regional Transit (DART), which runs buses only. A 3.5 mile skywalk allows residents to walk between buildings in the downtown area without going outside.
With a humid continental climate, Des Moines has hot summers, cold winters, moderate humidity and frequent, violent thunderstorms. Snowfall can be low to moderate and blizzards are known to affect the area. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes.
