Cranston, Rhode Island is a city of around 80,000 spread about an area of about 30 square miles. It is located in Providence County and is the third-largest city in the state. Cranston is part of the Providence metro area and was named one of the 100 Best Places to Live in 2006 by Money magazine.
The city is service by four large roadways including Interstate 95, I-295, Rhode Island 10 (Huntington Expressway), and RI-37. Compared to the rest of the state Cranston’s annual fatal accident count is typically lower. Public transportation is provided by the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) with bus service.
With a humid continental climate, Cranston has hot summers, cold winters, moderate humidity and violent thunderstorms. Snowfall can be low to moderate but blizzards are known to affect the area. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and an occasional but rare tornado. In addition, remnants from Atlantic hurricanes can sometimes affect the area with heavy rain and high winds.
