Columbia, Maryland is a city of around 88,000 spread about an area of about 28 square miles. It is a planned community located in Howard County and is a suburb of Washington, D.C. With a humid continental climate, Columbia has hot summers, cold winters, moderate humidity and violent thunderstorms. Snowfall can be low to moderate but blizzards are known to affect the area. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and an occasional but rare tornado. In addition, remnants from Atlantic hurricanes can sometimes affect the area with heavy rain and high winds.
