Charleston, South Carolina is a city of around 125,000 spread about an area of about 164 square miles. It is the seat of Charleston County and is the second largest city in the state. Charleston’s economy is based largely upon tourism, with many hotels, restaurants, and upscale shopping. It also has two shipping terminals operated by the South Carolina Ports Authority, part of the fourth largest container seaport on the East Coast.

Public bus service is operated by Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) serving urban areas. Rural parts and the metropolitan area are served by Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Rural Transportation Management Association (BCD-RTMA).

Charleston has a humid subtropical climate as such the city is accustomed to mild winters and hot humid summers. Precipitation is fairly evenly spread throughout the year with the wettest months being in winter and early summer. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes.
