Champaign, Illinois is a city of around 80,000 spread about an area of about 17 square miles. It is located in Champaign County and is the partial home of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With a humid continental climate, Champaign has hot summers, cold winters, moderate humidity and violent thunderstorms. Snowfall can be low to moderate but blizzards are known to affect the area. During late spring and early summer, the region can see violent thunderstorms with severe thunder and lightning storms, torrential rain, hail, and an occasional but rare tornado.
