Located on the eastern shores of Lake Erie at the head of the Niagara River and across from Fort Erie, Ontario, Buffalo, New York is the second most-populous city in the state of New York. Buffalo attracts millions of tourists to the western part of the state though it is known for its cold, snowy winters, which typically last from mid-November to mid-March.

Weather has occasionally caused significant damage such as during a major blizzard of 1977 and a severe storm in October of 2006. Despite its cold wet winters, Buffalo has some of the sunniest and driest summers in the Northeast U.S.


Buffalo’s main industries today are healthcare and education, which are growing despite the economic downturn in the rest of the country. There are seventy-eight public schools and forty-seven private schools in the city as well as a number of colleges and Universities. The unemployment rate is steady at 7.7% and lower than state and national averages.

Violent crime rates in Buffalo are over two times the national average and property crimes come in over the national average. Murder and robbery rates are especially high at nearly three and two-and-a-half times the national average, respectively but on the flip side, property crime rates are lower.

Buffalo was ranked the tenth best place in the country to raise a family in 2010. The city has significant populations of residents from Irish, Italian Polish, German, Jewish, and Greek descent. Buffalo is divided into 32 neighborhoods, largely along ethnic and historical lines.

  • Northeast Buffalo is connected by I-90, which is connected to southbound I-290 along eastern Buffalo.
  • Northwest Buffalo connects to I-190, which is connected by crosstown route to I-90.
  • Approaching Buffalo from the south is accomplished by a network of smaller highways and Canada is reachable via the Peace Bridge and Queen Elizabeth Highway.

Public Transportation
The city's streets are modeled after Washington DC, which is designed in a radial patter with broad spoke streets branching off from the center.Bus service is provided by the Niagara Frontier Transport Authority, which also provide service to and from Niagara Falls.The city's main attractions are serviced by a state-of-the-art rail system with 14 stations.
